What Is Music Production?

Music production is the art of using recording equipment to create a sound that is pleasing to the ear. It involves manipulating the frequency of a tone, changing its volume, and moving sounds between left and right speakers to produce a stereo image. It is an essential part of making a song, and it can be very creative; adding more bass or relocating instruments can make a song feel bigger and deeper.

The Platonic-Aristotelian view that the art of music was symbolic emphasized its power to communicate the universal. This idea gained strength in the 17th century with Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, who argued that because music is not spatialized in the way that other arts are, it is closer to an inner dynamism and can be understood directly.

Many bands start off by playing small gigs in their hometown or posting covers on YouTube. If they can manage to build a following, they will be spotted by an A&R rep for a record label or break out on their own. They will then work on improving their music and growing their audience, while continuing to play shows.

Music producers have a unique set of skills that allow them to craft the sound of a song. They are familiar with a wide range of genres and have an encyclopedic knowledge of the gear used in recording. They can operate the soundboard and help place microphones as well as assisting the musicians.
