What Is Music and How Does It Affect Us?
Music is a form of entertainment that has been around for thousands of years. It is also considered an art and an important medium for cultural exchange. It has evolved from a simple tool for recreation to a multi-billion dollar industry encompassing production, distribution, publishing, live concerts and streaming.
Production
Getting from the raw talent, ideas or songs of an artist to a finished musical product is a complex process that takes time. Producers play an essential role in this journey. They often act as a liaison between the artists and the recording engineers, translating their desires into the technical language of the field.
There are many different styles of music, from folk to classical. The earliest musical instruments were used for recreation, and the oldest known song was created using vocalization. The use of instruments for recreation was followed by more sophisticated forms of music that focused on expressing emotions, such as the Renaissance instrumental concerto and opera.
The acoustic properties of musical instruments, such as their frequency response, pitch and tone quality, can be categorized into groups like woodwind, brass and idiophones (such as the mbira). Other characteristics, such as rhythm, harmony and compositional structure, are grouped under the umbrella term musical theory.
There is a strong connection between music and emotions, from the emotional impact of a song to how it affects us psychologically. For instance, happy songs make us happier, and sad songs can trigger feelings of loss and depression.
