The Importance of Music
Music is an art form and a cultural phenomenon. Whether you love rock, classical, country or dance, there is a good chance you’ve heard or played music in your lifetime. The origins of musical instruments are thought to date back 40,000 years. Music has been an important part of human culture throughout history, but it is difficult to define. Some philosophers argue that it is a human need. Others, such as the ancient Greek Democritus, argue that it is superfluous, a luxury. Neuroscientists, musicologists and psychologists continue to ponder the role of music.
The production of music is an elaborate process. It starts with producers scouting for talent and auditioning musicians before they decide to take on a project. Producers have many responsibilities from choosing the right song to making sure it is recorded and mixed well. They may also be responsible for getting the band to a record deal or finding their own way to market the music.
Musical genres are determined by tradition and presentation as much as the music itself. Some works can exist in several genres at once, such as jazz or folk-rock. The emergence of electronic and computer generated music has blurred genre boundaries, as well.
Music is a complex amalgam of melody, harmony, rhythm, tone/timbre and musical form. Trying to pin down its essence is challenging, even for philosophers who study it. It can be described as ‘a sensuous dimension beyond the realm of words’ (Soren Kierkegaard) or as ‘an event between noise and silence’ (Eduard Hanslick). Ultimately, music is something that can only be experienced rather than understood.
