The History of Music
The history of music theory is a long and varied one, with many competing schools and approaches. While the chief points of view are not separate, they overlap in different proportions. One of the most influential theories came from 19th century English psychologist Edmund Gurney, who incorporated formalist, symbolic, expressionist, and psychological elements into a new and unified theory of music. However, this theory is not without its critics. Here are some of the most prominent works on the subject.
The Greek philosopher St. Augustine valued music because of its religious utility. However, he feared music’s sensual aspect, and he was anxious that melody never prevailed over words. He echoed the beliefs of Greek philosophers, such as Plato, who believed that music imitates celestial movements. Likewise, the medieval Christian philosopher John Calvin was more cautious about music, arguing that it should not be too complicated or voluptuous.
Most theorists agree that music is a form of speech, which we understand by hearing. Music’s philosophical role is to create myths and evoke emotions in human beings. While the distinction between speech and music is often difficult to draw, most of theorists agree on the fact that the act of hearing itself is the first step in understanding music. This dichotomy is a problem in music theory. However, the ideal motion would eliminate the objections of the critics.
The history of music traces its origins to the ancient Greeks. The Greeks assigned music a variety of roles, including ceremonial, ritual, and political life. However, the role of music in the evolution of society has been controversial. Its role in social life has been questioned by philosophers throughout history. The relationship between music and human emotion has led to a variety of theories. So, what is the origin of music? The answers to these questions are rooted in ancient history, and music has always occupied an important place in it.
