What Is Music?

Music is sound with particular characteristics. It is often pleasant to listen to, and there are recognizable patterns in musical styles and performances. Traditionally, philosophies define music as tones ordered horizontally (as melodies) and vertically (as harmonies). Music producers create recordings of the music they compose and produce. In some styles that are purely live, music producers edit and splice elements of the performance to produce a recording which is often considered better than the original performance.

The most important aspects of production include style, pitch, beat, tempo, rhythm, harmony, vocal allocation and color. There are also other elements which are not as essential, but still important. These include expression, articulation and form.

In 2022, the global recorded music industry earned $26.2 billion from paid subscriptions and ad revenue on streaming services. This is the highest amount that it has ever earned. This figure is expected to increase in 2023.

Music has been used for communication since ancient times. It can be seen in the use of bells to notify soldiers at camp, the tones of a phone ringing to indicate someone is calling or the sound of an ambulance sirens to signal danger. In addition, the sounds of music can stimulate certain physical sensations like goosebumps and a hair-raising feeling. It can even make plants grow faster.

The Romantic era of classical music began with the German masters Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Hector Berlioz and Franz Liszt were great Romantic composers, as well. By the 1800s, technological inventions like gramophones and radios made it easier for people with lower incomes to enjoy and learn about new songs and music pieces. This opened up new genres of music.
