What is the Point of Music?
Music does a lot of things: it communicates information and emotions, it plays a substantial role in culture, it provides entertainment, it gives people an outlet to be creative, it helps us understand beauty and it has value all on its own. It’s a rich art form, which is why it can be difficult to narrow down what exactly the point of Music is.

The process of composing a piece of music starts with the selection and arrangement of sounds to create a particular pattern or effect. This is accomplished by using different instruments and varying the volume, tempo and other parameters of a song to give it the desired effect. It also involves the use of pauses or silence to organize the sounds into rhythms such as strong beats and weak ones that are separated by measures. It also involves articulation, which refers to the way the notes are played or words pronounced—short (staccato), smooth (legato), stressed or emphasized, sudden emphasis (sforzando), etc.

Traditionally, music has been created by a solo artist, though it is increasingly being written and produced in teams. For example, a pop band might have several people contributing to the lyrics and vocals while an orchestra will typically have many members performing individual parts.
