Music production is the process of creating musical works from initial idea to finished product, and it requires a combination of technical skills and creative talent. Various aspects of music production include composition, arranging, recording, editing, mixing and mastering. The use of digital audio workstations (DAW) and software applications are common tools in the process of music production.
In addition to timbre and rhythm, music can be defined by its dynamics, structure, and articulation. These concepts are related to the way a piece of music sounds, and include the loudness or softness of the sound and whether it is gradual in its progression or abrupt in its climax. Articulation refers to the manner in which notes are played or sung, including short or long durations and stresses or unstresses, as well as whether they are played staccato, legato, slurred or articulated with sudden emphasis, such as sforzando.
