What is the Point of Music?
Music accomplishes many things: it can communicate ideas and emotions, it plays a substantial role in culture, it provides entertainment, it offers people an outlet to be creative, it helps us understand beauty, and it has value on its own. But there is also a more philosophical question: what is the point of music?
Producing music is a complex task that requires skills in singing, playing an instrument, recording, mixing, and mastering. It is an art form in which the creative process of composing and arranging can result in works that range from purely instrumental to pop, rock, rap, and classical music.
Artists are constantly creating and reinventing musical styles that reflect their own cultural heritage and contemporary influences. These trends include the fusion of traditional and modern sounds, such as the Venezuelan cuatro guitar and a dusty rap cadence, or the way in which an electric guitarist’s sprawling compositions track huge emotional peaks and valleys with jarring silences and thrashing drum ‘n’ bass breakbeats.
The popularity of genres like Gangnam Style and the increasing presence of Latin artists in popular music has shown the way in which music can incorporate a wide range of influences to achieve mass appeal. And music can also be used in visual media to enhance storytelling and characterization, whether by using iconic songs in films like Forrest Gump or Guardians of the Galaxy, or by adding catchy jingles to TV shows or products.
The world of music is a vast landscape of sound that can be enjoyed by anyone. From the lush melodies of Classical music to the gritty beats of Trap, there is sure to be a genre that resonates with everyone.
