Diversifying Genres and Festivals

Georgia has a rich musical history, producing award-winning musicians from the rap genre to country to gospel. Famous Georgian artists include the Atlanta Rhythm Section, B.o.B., Ciara, Keri Hilson, and Lil Jon, and country superstars such as Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean. The state’s music scene is home to a variety of signature music festivals including A3C Hip Hop Festival, Music Midtown, and Savannah’s Southern Gospel and Pop Festival.

Future Music Oregon (FMO) is a program dedicated to exploring new types of music and sound through innovative use of computers and recent technologies. Faculty members embrace a dual role of creative and educational pursuits. Course offerings include Electronic Composition, Interactive Media Performance, Digital Audio and Sound Design, and History of Electro-Acoustic Music. Students in these programs are exposed to a wide variety of genres, ranging from classical to jazz to popular contemporary music.

Record companies and artist managers are increasingly involved in other forms of music besides recording. For example, many classical companies are diversifying by increasing their involvement in tour and festival production, as well as licensing rights and merchandising. Other classical companies are participating in the development of niche festivals aimed at attracting new audiences and generating sustainable income. Increasingly, the digital music market is also fuelling innovation. Today, the digital music industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry, encompassing all aspects of the music industry.

In addition to classical music, secular festivals have evolved in recent years. In Germany, the Bayreuth Festival was launched in 1876 by composer Richard Wagner and presented music dramas and operas by the composer. In Austria, the Salzburg festival took place in 1877 in the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the early twentieth century, it branched out into other genres, including punk rock. These festivals continue today, and they are held in various cities around the world.
