The Influence of Music in Australia
People have been using music to express themselves throughout history. From jukeboxes to earbuds, from concert halls to bars and restaurants, music has influenced our society. People cry, laugh, and dance to music. It is no surprise then that music continues to shape society and culture. And although music is not necessarily the source of happiness, it certainly is one of the most important elements in our lives. Throughout history, people have used music to express themselves and make others feel good.
The first CD was released in 1982, and in the following 20 years, over 200 billion CDs were sold worldwide. Instead of using magnetic tape, this technology used digital optical recording to embed playable tracks on a polycarbonate plastic disc. It was light, thin, and produced superior stereo sound. These new technologies made music portable and affordable for everyone. By the 1990s, CDs replaced the tape collection and became the standard for portable music. Even today, CDs are widely available in retail stores.
Whether it is music for personal enjoyment or as a means to express a political message, Australians are huge fans of music. In fact, the Australian music industry is the sixth largest in the world, and the seventh biggest in the digital sector. The country spends over $350 million on recorded music every year. Over 20% of the population is involved in some form of music creation. The triple j Unearthed digital radio site features over 40 thousand Australian musicians and boasts 3.5 million unique users.
