Music is an art that, in one guise or another, permeates every human society. It lends itself easily to alliances with speech and with physical movement, such as dancing, and it has long been credited with a power to reflect and influence emotion. Modern culture exploits these possibilities in a bewildering profusion of styles.
In the 19th century, the widespread use of radio and phonographs made it possible for most people to listen to operas and symphonies right in their own living rooms. These innovations made it easy for middle and lower-class people to enjoy the richness of classical music, which was confined before to the homes of those who could afford to purchase sheet music.
Today, the three biggest record companies have around 65% of the US market. One of the most popular genres of music is Pop, which became famous with artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince and has many subgenres like Rhythm and Blues (RB), Rock (including Psychedelic Rock and Hair Metal), and Hip Hop.
Other genres include Jazz, which has many different kinds and is often improvisational, and Classical, which follows strict rules set down by a long tradition and requires an orchestra to perform. A more obscure genre is called Heavy metal, which started in the late 60s with bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and has many different subgenres including Alternative Hip Hop, Jazz Rap, and Ragga Hip Hop.
Other music facts that you might not know are that the scale has seven notes and that a singer-songwriter is someone who writes and sings his or her own songs. Scientists have found that plants react to good music by growing faster and healthier.
