The Theory of Music

1. Music is a powerful tool to relax your mind, a good companion that makes you work better!

Music, from its earliest appearance, has been an important element in human culture. Its popularity and widespread effects have stimulated many philosophers to attempt to explain its intrinsic value. Theories have generally been divided into two main categories: those that seek to establish relationships between music and some extramusical consideration (such as the emotions it arouses), and those that maintain that music has an independent significance. Frequently, theories will combine elements of both. A 19th-century English psychologist, Edmund Gurney (1847-88), for example, incorporated formalist, symbolist, and expressionist ideas in his theory of music.
