The History of Music

Music is a form of art that involves composing, performing and recording sound. The genre encompasses many styles and forms, as well as a variety of instruments, techniques, and practices.

The History of Music

One of the oldest recorded musical traditions is rooted in the Roman Empire. The Roman Catholic Church, which was the primary authority for musical values, governed the formation of this tradition in the early centuries of the Christian era.

The Renaissance saw a shift in European musical culture as classical composers began to look at the world around them. German masters of the time such as Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, Polish piano/poet Frederic Chopin, French genius Hector Berlioz, and Hungarian composer Franz Liszt all developed their own unique musical language, while also looking to their own traditions.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, composers such as Carl Maria von Weber and Johannes Brahms used traditional German folk stories to form librettos for their operas. Likewise, the French, Italian and Hungarian geniuses of the same period such as Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart all took their cue from traditional literature to create operas.

Music serves a number of important purposes, most notably as a communication medium and as a way of establishing social cohesion. It is even believed that music predates the development of language and is therefore a natural, innate part of human life.
