Why Do People Prefer Certain Genres of Music?
If you’ve ever wondered why people have a preference for certain types of music, you’re not alone. According to a report by Nielsen, the U.S. music industry is 85% digital, compared to 38% for physical sales. Even more interesting is the fact that the U.S. market has its own distinct cultural context, reflected in different musical preferences among its 210 DMAs (districts, metropolitan areas, or territories).
The ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with the earliest known musical numerologist work. He established the correlation between string length and pitch, but failed to move beyond this basic principle. He instead tried to link sounds and motion together. Aristotle later added the concept of “sensation” to music, which was already known in ancient Greece. Music has a long history of influence, extending to all cultures and periods.

The five largest music festivals alone make a combined $183 million in ticket sales, not including sponsorships, food, and merchandise.
