What Is Music?

Music is an art form that involves the creation of sound, and is often defined by a combination of rhythm, melody, harmony and form. Although exact definitions vary around the world, music is generally regarded as a cultural universal.

Throughout history, humans have used music to communicate with each other and with nature. Some of the earliest uses of music include singing, drumming, and beating hollow logs.

In addition to humans, some animals use song to communicate with their mates or protect their territories. Monkeys have been seen beating logs to scare away predators, and birds use their songs to attract a mate or to keep their territory safe.

Some people create music as a hobby, and others do it professionally. Professional musicians may work in an orchestra, as a soloist, or with a band.

The processes involved in making music, including recording, arranging and mixing, are usually handled by a producer. The producer scouts for talent, decides how and when songs will be recorded, and oversees the entire process.

Some of the earliest forms of music have been found in ancient sources, such as Egyptian inscriptions and the Bible. The human voice is thought to be the earliest instrument that can generate sounds; this makes it a perfect candidate for being the first musical instrument.

Music also has a long tradition of invoking social change and tradition, and it is a major part of culture. In the twentieth century, popular music like jazz, blues and rock and roll advanced egalitarian values and contributed to the loosening of sexual mores.
