The History and Philosophy of Music
Music is one of the most universal art forms and, in its many varied guises, permeates all human societies. It has been credited with the power to influence and elicit emotions, and popular culture has often exploited this quality in its alliances with words, as in song, and with physical movement, as in dance. Today, music can be heard in a bewildering profusion of styles, some contemporary, others originating in past eras.
Production of Music
The history of the development of musical theories has been a thorny and fractious affair, with diametrically opposing positions often tenaciously held. The Greek Platonist philosopher Aristotle (381-471 BC) took a highly intellectual view of music, seeing it as satisfying a rational function and stressing the mathematical properties of individual tones, while the Epicureans and Stoics gave greater weight to sensation than to intellect.
Various philosophies and religious faiths have also contributed to the development of Music. Martin Luther (1483-1546) favoured simple, direct music that was accessible and an aid to piety; the Protestant reformer John Calvin (1509-64) feared voluptuous and effeminate musical forms and insisted on the supremacy of biblical text. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), a German philosopher, placed music near the bottom of his hierarchy of the arts, and disliked its wordless nature, but, when allied with poetry, it might acquire conceptual value.
A singer-songwriter is a musician who writes and performs their own songs. They usually play the guitar or piano. They can be a solo artist or they may have a band with other musicians. A double bass is a large stringed instrument for playing low notes, found in orchestras.
