What Is Music?
Music is the art of putting sounds together in a way that people like, find interesting or dance to.
It’s the world’s favorite pastime and most people spend more than four hours a day listening to their favorite songs. It’s also a total brain workout that boosts memory, builds task endurance, lightens mood, reduces anxiety and depression, staves off fatigue, improves response to pain and enhances mental alertness.
Production
Musical compositions are made by skilful musicians who combine different parts of sound, rhythm and silence to create a coherent or unified piece of music. This consists of a series of sound and rhythm elements which are arranged in time to create a melody, harmony, texture, style, allocation of voices, timbre or color, dynamics, expression, articulation, form and structure.
Facts about Music
Music is one of the oldest art forms that can be traced back to prehistoric times. It has been used for ceremonies, rituals, religious purposes, practical and artistic communication and even propaganda.
The earliest evidence of the human ability to make music comes from bone flutes carved by a Palaeolithic man around 40,000 BP. These are among the first examples of a recognizable musical instrument, although other early instruments, such as swan and vulture wing bones, may have been used.
