What Is Music?
Music is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds for beauty of form and emotional expression, according to cultural standards of rhythm, melody, and harmony. It is also the art of combining these sounds for dramatic effect. Whether it is a simple folk song or a complex electronic composition, both are music.
Music production is the process of creating, capturing and preserving a musical piece so that it can be played back at a later time. This includes the work of a producer who oversees a recording session’s creative and technical aspects, an audio engineer who attends to all the sound production, and songwriters who write the lyrics.
One of the most interesting facts about music is that it can give pleasure like eating a delicious meal or spending quality time with your loved ones. The feeling of a frisson or ‘goosebumps’ is what makes us love listening to our favourite songs and instrumentals. It has also been proved that plants grow faster and healthier when they are played some good music!
Rhythmic groupings in a song are called MEASURES. They can be 2, 3, or 4 beats in length and can be subdivided into two equal halves (simple meter), or three equal thirds (compound meter). Song that are grouped into simple meter sound straight and even, whilst those in compound subdivision sound swung or jazzy.
Melodic contour is the shape of a melody, which can be flat and repetitive, or stepped up or down a scale. A stepwise motion sounds more stable, whereas a leaping motion is more energized and dramatic. Pitch is how high or low a note is, and is shown in written music by notes on a staff that indicate what pitch to play at and for how long.
