Genres of Music
The production of music can include a wide range of styles and techniques. It is a creative art form, a way to express emotions and it can have practical utility as well, such as providing motivation during exercise or helping to relax the mind. Music has an ancient history, with bone flutes dating back as far as 40,000 years and researchers now think that music may have predated the development of language.
Musical genres are groups of songs that have similar musical characteristics. Some examples include;
Reggae – Developed in Jamaica in the 1960s by artists like Bob Marley, Reggae fuses traditional Jamaican folk music with R&B and jazz, creating offbeat rhythms and staccato chords. Reggae is closely linked to the religion of Rastafarianism and is a style that has become popular around the world.
Hip hop – Developed in the Bronx, Hip hop is a combination of rap, breakdancing and graffiti art. It is often socially conscious and explores themes of injustice, inequality and racial tensions.
Mod – Created by Motown Records in the 1960s, Mod was a genre that became popular among working class communities across Britain. This genre blended modern jazz with Northern Soul and was a style that was influenced by the UK film Quadrophenia. Artists such as Cream and Creedence Clearwater Revival were a big part of this movement.
During the Romantic period of the early nineteenth century, composers added more emotional depth to existing classical musical forms. The works of German composers Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, Polish pianist Frederic Chopin and French genius Hector Berlioz are considered to be among the first Romantic masterpieces.
