What Is Music?
Music is a form of art that combines the elements of sound, harmony, melody and rhythm. While the definition of what is considered music varies from culture to culture, there are many common characteristics and properties. Music is used for a variety of purposes including entertainment, education and communication.
A song only exists in the ether until it is recorded. Once it is recorded, the individual parts of a song are separated and named (tracked). Each instrument can be added to or removed from the final recording according to what the producer wants it to do. For example, a drum track may be used for the entire first verse but then dropped out of the chorus for maximum impact, or a keyboard part might be added to the final track to provide a sense of climax.
Musical instruments have accompanied Homo sapiens since prehistoric times. Vocal and percussive sounds generated by the human voice and body, or percussion instruments such as hollow logs, stones and bones have been recorded in archaeological sites. In addition, there are reports of 40,000-year-old bone flutes and other ancient musical instruments in caves.
Music can be emotionally moving and stimulate the imagination. It can invoke age-old traditions, incite social change or connect people around the world. The universal appeal of jazz, folk and rock n’ roll advanced egalitarian values and helped loosen racial and sexual mores in the twentieth century. Musical entertainment also provides fun and escapism. Whether it is singing along with a favorite artist on the radio, dancing to music in the living room or simply listening to friends sing and laugh, enjoying music is an integral part of our lives.
