The Many Faces of Music
Music has been a hugely important part of human culture throughout history. It has developed from the earliest calls and rhythms, beaten out with sticks and stones by our ancient ancestors, to a massive variety of genres that can communicate just about anything – love, fear, sadness or joy.
There is even a science to it, as studies have shown that different musical compositions can affect things like retail purchases and the duration of strenuous physical tasks. Music can be used for socializing, calming down or for religious purposes. It has even been used as psychological warfare to wear down people in standoffs and as a way to torture terrorists.
Most musicians will start their careers by playing gigs in small pubs and venues, recording covers on Youtube or making mashups of popular songs. Some will get signed by a label or be discovered online, and then they’ll start writing and performing their own music. Eventually, they’ll grow their audience and then start planning bigger gigs. Then they’ll make more music and the cycle starts all over again.
Some of the most famous musicians are pop stars like Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Justin Bieber. But there are also many talented singers, composers and bands who don’t have the fame or fortune that some do. These artists will usually start by working in smaller bars and clubs, before getting spotted by someone who can help them make their dream a reality.
