Music Genres and Festivals
While the term rock and roll has a long and distinguished history, the genre has evolved and spawned several sub-genres. Generally, rock and roll bands consist of bass, electric guitars, drums, and lead vocals. These musicians’ songs are often energetic and fast-paced. The music also has a powerful stage presence. Some of the early LA bands that paved the way for this genre include X, Black Flag, and the Germs.
In the 18th century, amateur music competitions began in pubs. These competitions were adjudicated by prominent figures. In 1790, singers from Stoughton and Dorchester, Massachusetts, participated in a singing competition in Dorchester. In the twentieth century, amateur competitions were organized on a larger scale.
With an abundance of live music events, Austin, Texas, is America’s number one city for live music. With an average of five live music venues per capita, Austin has nine music festivals planned through 2022, which is almost twice as many as the average U.S. city. Music events bring a city to life, and live events are an integral part of the local culture.
Rock and pop are the most popular music genres, but the popularity of rap has recently grown. In the United States, hip-hop has become the most popular genre among 12-34 year olds. The genre is still dominated by men, though women hip-hop artists are making a name for themselves in the genre.
